CJRS Final Phase – What you need to know.
21 May 2021
The introduction of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) at the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, provided a lifeline for many businesses and their employees as the economy was put on pause with business forced to close with no idea when they would reopen.
The scheme has been tweaked over the last year, but in essence, the basic principle has stayed the same, to pay furloughed workers 80% of their salary capped at £2,500 per month.
The final period of the CJRS runs from 1st May to 30th September 2021.
CJRS has been extended a number of times, with the Budget in March 2021 being the last occasion a change in the schemes end date was revised. CJRS will end on 30th September 2021. Employees will continue to receive 80% of their salary up to the cap as they have previously, however, the amount that employers are able to claim for is reduced from July 2021.
If measures continue to ease in accordance with the Government road map and all restrictions are lifted on the 21st of June, businesses will start to recover and the financial support that has been available will continue to reduce – including the CJRS payments.
From July 2021, furloughed employees will still receive 80% of their usual pay. However, the employer can now only claim 70% of this amount through the CJRS scheme. The shortfall needs to be made up by the employer.
For the final two months of the scheme – August and September, the employers claim is reduced further to 60%, leaving them to make up the additional 20% of the furloughed employees’ salary to the total of 80% of their usual wage.
The table below shows what levels of support are available for the remaining months of the scheme.
Claims for the final phase of CJRS are to be made in the same way as they have been since November 2020. With CJRS coming to an end on 30th September, it is important that claims are submitted and processed by the deadlines detailed below. Claims are to be made in the same way as they have been since November 2020, for a calendar month and by the 14th of the following month.
The table below gives more information on these deadlines.
