The Law Grad’s Guide to a Career You Didn’t Know Existed.
08 Sep 2026
Most law students hear the same three words on repeat: barrister, solicitor, legal practice. It’s the default assumption baked into the degree, you study law, you become a lawyer. Nobody hands you a fourth option.
Here’s one worth knowing about: tax advisory.
It sounds like a strange fit at first. Tax gets filed under “numbers,” and law gets filed under “arguments.” But look closer and the two disciplines are doing the same job: reading dense, technical rules, working out exactly what they mean for a real situation, and building a case for the right course of action. A law degree doesn’t waste a single one of those skills in tax. If anything, it’s better prepared for it than most people realise.
At WR Partners, we’ve seen this play out directly. Some of our strongest tax advisors didn’t come from accountancy backgrounds at all. They came from law, uncertain about committing to the cost and years of qualifying as a solicitor, and looking for a career with the same intellectual challenge but a clearer, faster route to actually doing the work.
Forget the stereotype of someone quietly filing forms. Tax advisory is problem-solving work: understanding a client’s situation, working through what the legislation actually allows, and advising on the best way forward. Deadlines matter, precision matters, and no two client situations look quite the same. That’s exactly why the analytical instincts built through a law degree translate so directly.
Qualifying as a solicitor is one route, and increasingly firms offer ways to study for the SQE while working, often with costs covered. But it’s completely reasonable to study law and still be unsure whether that’s the path you want, or to want to know what else your degree could lead to. Tax advisory offers a genuine alternative: the same kind of structured, work-while-you-study progression, built on skills your degree already gave you, just applied to a different kind of problem.
Tax is one piece of a wider business advisory picture. Advisors at WR Partners don’t just work in isolation on tax questions, they’re often pulled into broader conversations about how a business is run, structured and growing. For a law grad who enjoyed the strategic, problem-solving side of their degree, that breadth is often the part that surprises them most.
If you’re in your third year, or just graduated, and you’re not entirely sold on the traditional legal route, this might be worth a proper look before you rule it out.
